With the advent of high resolution digital photography retinal imaging has become the new gold standard of eyecare. Simply put it allows for earlier, more accurate detection of eye damage from smoking, glaucoma, diabetes, macular degeneration, high blood pressure and cholesterol.
Diabetes is the most common cause of preventable
blindness in the developed world.
In the photo above there are two dark spots-
microaneurisms (blisters on a capilary) below and
close to the fovea (the large dark area).
