David Shanahan

David believes optometry is a big benficiary of the digital revolution we are living through. This year 2012, David plans to convert his practice in Fremantle into Perth's most comprehensive digital eye scan centre. The centre has already ordered one of the first wide laser ophthalmoscope to come to Western Australia.

In addition to having the latest technologies David keeps to the forefront of the latest research in optometry. In 2011, David was one of the first optometrists in Western Australia to complete new Post Graduate qualifications in Ocular Therapeutic through the University of NSW. David is a Fellow of the Irish Association of Optometrists, Member of the Australian Association of Optometrists, Member of the Australian contact lens Society and Clinical Associate of the Optometric Extension Program.

David first optometric practice was a successful and award winning practice in Ireland which he developed over 10 years. When he sold the practice it had a reputation as "the" opticians to buy fun or trendy eyewear. In 2001 David and Terri, his Australian wife, made the decision to move to the Australia.

David has no time fof the "Bozos' of the eyewear world. Eyewear you see sold in shopping centres around the world is done to a stale but prosperous formula. A large frame manufacturer buys the naming rights from a famous designer brand. The manufacturer can pay as much as $400 million for just a three year contract to use the name. To make sure it makes a profit from  this, the manufacturer must make best sellers. The safest way to do this is to look at what sold well last year- Then put the expensive label on that. And make it just good enough to survive the 12 month warranty period. Safe, boring and not very good.

David looks for genuine, innovative spectacle makers who make beautiful glasses and are committed to using the latest technologies, design and materials. David has the largest collection of vintage frames in Australia. A 1920’s brass art deco cabinet in his practice displays 30 frames from this collection. Each frame is in excellent condition and comes with a two year warranty, a rarity for vintage items.
